What to expect on your first visit to the Pain Service

You will be fully assessed by a team of experts including medical doctors who have specialised in pain, clinical psychologists and senior physiotherapists.  This will take up to two and a half hours and will include a full history of your situation and an in depth assessment of any contributing factors towards this.  Refreshments and breaks are available and we encourage you to bring along friends or relatives if you wish.  The multidisciplinary team will then meet and discuss your case and guide you through the pathway that will help you most.

You will also need to attend a session where we explain the nature of pain.  This is very important as research has shown that when people understand why their pain doesn’t go, it becomes less of a “monster” and is the start of the journey to getting back control over their life.

Some of the interventions in the pain clinic you may have had before but even if you have; you will find them much more effective when offered as part of a treatment package.  The results of our Community Pain Service have been very encouraging and we are sure you will find them equally beneficial.

The clinic is a short intensive programme and may last up to 8 weeks.  At the end of this, you will have a final review.  We do not however abandon patients at this stage and will point you to advice and support that you can further utilise to help you on your journey to a better place with less pain.  These are described below:
