Improving your activity

“If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented” says Dr Nick Cavill, a health promotion consultant.

It can reduce back pain, arthritic pain in joints, and many pains from soft tissues. It also reduces your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lowers your risk of early death by up to 30%.

Exercise is the miracle cure we’ve always had, but for too long we’ve neglected to take our recommended dose. Our health is now suffering as a consequence. Whatever your age, there's strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and even happier life.

Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Your GP is able to refer you for exercise on prescription at The Arena Leisure Centre in Camberley.  Ask your doctor for more information. Get Active 50+ are swimming classes run for the over 50’s who have never learnt to swim. It costs £25 for an 8 week programme and the first “taster session” is free. Contact The Arena Leisure Centre on 01276 417111
